THE SACRAMENTAL LIFE
THE SACRAMENTAL LIFE employs the material world to make real the spiritual world. In embodying our spirituality we participate in the physical sacraments of the Church and live as God's people on earth, thus eliminating any material/spiritual dichotomy.
The Sacramental Life is the arena where all of us "do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Col. 3:17). In the selections that follow note how the writers ignore the artificial wall between the material world and the spiritual world, how many vocations are represented, and how the discussion progresses from the lofty creation to lowly chores.
Known especially for his lucid writing, G. K. Chesterton contrasts the scientific, materialistic understanding of the universe with the belief that the physical creation is good and full of mystery. Athanasius, a theologian, delves into this mystery further as he explains why it became necessary for God to take on a physical, human body in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Writer Annie Dillard looks at the physical, yet extraordinarily spiritual, world.
In the selection form Soren Kierkegaard we find an academic -- a philosopher -- imbibing so deeply of the spiritual life that he inserts written prayers into his many discourses. Former United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammerskjold, whose life was concerned with finding solutions to social injustice, brings the spiritual into the diplomatic arena when he says "yes" to God.
Kathleen Norris, a poet and writer by vocation, speaks eloquently to those of us who find it difficult to discover the spiritual in the mundane jobs necessary for nurturing and sustaining physical life. Finally, Brother Lawrence teaches us that God is habitually present in everything we do, even in the most trivial of chores.
In a culture that looks askance at expressions of faith in the marketplace, it will serve us well to drink deeply at the well of the Sacramental Life.
